Who Are We?

Every day babies are born with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss, caused by dysfunction of the inner ear.   Years ago these individuals were limited to a world of sign language, lip reading, separate schooling, and inadequate hearing aids.

The Rienzi Foundation is dedicated to furthering the research and development of cochlear implants, a revolutionary new treatment option, that can actually give back the gift of sound.

BY DELTHIA RICKS | delthia.ricks@newsday.com
March 4, 2008

Through the power of Internet technology, medical experts in New York have switched on an inner-ear device, allowing a man in Uganda to hear for the first time in two years.

Activating the device from halfway around the world is a first, and highlights a trailblazing way in which the growing realm of telemedicine - conducting medical procedures from remote locations - can enhance the lives of people in struggling nations.

COMPANY HISTORY

My son Michael was 3 years old when he received a Cochlear Implant. I took him to the beach because I wanted him to experience something beautiful, powerful and full of life.

The moment that is forever embedded in my soul was seeing his expression upon hearing  the  ocean and seagulls for the first time.

  - Joseph Rienzi, President.

Three and a half years ago Joseph Rienzi, Co-founder of the foundation, brought his son to the NYU Cochlear Implant Center, a leader and pioneer in the field for almost two decades, for cochlear implant surgery and follow-up treatment.   The experience had such a profound effect on his child’s life that the family felt driven to help other people around the country receive the same gift of sound.

After careful planning and diligent research, The Rienzi Foundation for Cochlear Implant Research was officially formed. This March the foundation will host its Launch Gala.
